ANDREW BOND – A Playlist for Nipper – 9 April–3 May 2024
Most of us at some stage have encountered the ‘His Master’s Voice’ logo, The curious cross-breed terrier peering into the sound-horn of an old-style gramaphone. This image has become the inspiration behind Andrew Bond’s latest suite of paintings. His love of music and its pivotal role as a catalyst for image making within his practice, are front and centre in this group of works titled ‘A Playlist For Nipper’, Nipper being the HMV dog’s name. Each painting is named not for its content but rather for a piece of music that played as it was being painted. Featuring reworked images of Nipper and the gramaphone within abstracted spaces or ‘worlds’ where the deceased dog can seemingly enjoy and engage with this music that was created long after the dog’s demise. Painting like music is a medium where one can indulge in the absurd, and Andrew Bond aims to celebrate this absurdity. The inner subjective world is the hero here, and each new viewer is invited to use their own subjectivity to unpack the visual offerings these paintings present.
