JACQUI COLLEY – To the sea – 7 Nov-1 Dec, 2023
Jacqui Colley’s painterly dialect is clear and strong in her latest body of work. The fundamental physical attributes of the paintings are the grammar of Colley’s visual language. The flat, rectangular canvas, the medium, the texture dictate the ultimate form of each work and provide the foundation for meaning and expression. Colour is syntactical, providing interior structure. Hues and tones are layered, palimpsest-like, so that meaning simultaneously accumulates and is obscured. Syllabic brushstrokes are staccato and plosive, fluid and assonant. Colley works them into painterly phrases which provide each work with its own rhythm and cadence. This brings us back to the title of this collection, To the Sea, with its intimations of restless movement that is both journey’s end and journey’s beginning.
