THE ENLIGHTENMENT PROJECT – Marian Maguire – 9 Aug-3 Sept 2022
The Enlightenment Project
An exploration of Western history
In an attempt to understand Western history and its world-wide impact Marian Maguire produced a new suite of prints that map philosophical ideas, politics, scientific discoveries, inventions and historical events. Her starting point was the Age of Enlightenment – it was during that era that Cook’s Endeavour first dropped anchor in waters around Aotearoa New Zealand. She travelled both backwards in time, to classical antiquity, and forwards to the end of the nineteenth-century to create a framework that is expressed in the two main bookish images: Sight and Blindness I: Reason and Sight and Blindness II: Expansion. Two Diagrams plot key ideas and smaller Eye works expand on visual details.
