Jasmine Gallagher reviews Rebecca Harris’ exhibition ‘Dark Burns the Night, Flirty Bird Flies’ in Autumn 2021 Art New Zealand.
In this series of landscape paintings Rebecca Harris veers closer to realism than some of her more surreal work from arround 2015. This is a trend that has increasingly emerged in her painting over the last couple of years, yet there is still an element of fantasy present. In particular, Dark Burns the Night, Flirty Bird Flies seems to form a kind of setting for fairy-tale narratives, partly due to the prominence of paths winding their way through gardens, forests and thickets, inviting one to speculate where one might end up if one were transported into these worlds…
